Activity guide Beach

Sand, sun, salt and an empty towel. A beach crossbody has to handle all four.

The best waterproof crossbody bag for the beach is one designed to be submersible when sealed, not just splash-resistant, sized for a phone, wallet, keys and sunglasses, and easy to rinse clean of sand and salt.

Risk table

What the beach does to a bag

Each beach hazard asks something different of the bag, and of you.

Hazard What helps
Sand and saltGrit in the zipper; salt drying on it Rinse waterproof zippers in fresh water after use, and clean grit out of the teeth before you close one. A drysuit maker's care guide puts it plainly: never try to zip a dirty zipper. DUI
Sun and heatThe phone inside, not just the bag Apple says iPhone is designed for ambient temperatures of 32° to 95°F and warns against leaving it in a car on a hot day. Keep the bag in shade between swims. Apple
TheftThe empty towel problem New South Wales Police advise never leaving valuables unattended, and carrying small items like a car key, cards and phone in a waterproof pouch on your person. NSW Police
Surf and swimmingThe bag goes where you go A bag on your body follows you into the water, so it has to be sealed for that. It does nothing for you in a rip current; see the safety note below. SKÖ

Before you buy

Four checks for a beach crossbody

The closure Submersible, not splash-resistant

"Water-resistant" usually means rain and splashes. If the bag will go into the waves with you, look for a maker that says it's designed for submersion when closed, and read how it has to be closed. A waterproof zipper left a few teeth open isn't sealed.

The size Your essentials, nothing more

Phone, wallet or a card, car key, sunglasses. A bigger bag invites a towel and sunscreen you then have to wear. Those belong in a tote that can stay on the sand, because there's nothing in it worth stealing.

The strap Snug, adjustable, front or side

A strap that adjusts short keeps the bag close instead of swinging, and lets you move it to your front in a crowd. Try it over a swimsuit, not a T-shirt.

The care Easy to rinse and dry

Fresh water and a soft brush clear the zipper track.

A smooth outer surface rinses clean under a tap; fabric and mesh hold sand. Rinse after every beach day and let it dry open. If the zipper starts to stick, here's why waterproof zippers get hard to open.

Format

Crossbody or phone pouch?

A crossbody makes sense if…

  • You carry a key, cards and sunglasses, not just a phone
  • You want it worn hands-free on the walk and at the snack bar
  • You'd rather not leave anything on the towel

A pouch may be enough if…

  • A phone is all you bring
  • You want to use the screen through a clear window
  • Something else holds the key
