SKÖ vs Nite Ize RunOff Waterproof Waist Pack: Which Is Better?

SKÖ vs Nite Ize
RunOff Waist Pack
These two bags cost almost exactly the same, but they solve the problem very differently. SKÖ goes smaller and heavier-duty with 1680D TPU. Nite Ize goes larger and lighter with a 3-liter body, TRU Zip closure, touchscreen phone window and floatable design.
SKÖ Gear publishes this comparison and manufactures the SKÖ Crossbody. We use current manufacturer specifications, clearly separate published facts from editorial judgment, and call out categories where Nite Ize has the advantage. No independent lab test of the Nite Ize Waist Pack was performed for this article. Prices, specifications and availability can change.
Same price.
Very different priorities.
The Nite Ize Waist Pack wins on published capacity, weight, phone access and flotation. SKÖ is the smaller option with a much heavier 1680D TPU material specification and a more compact footprint. The better bag depends on whether you want maximum utility per ounce or a smaller, more substantial-feeling carry for essentials.
Best fit for compact, heavy-duty essentials carry
Choose SKÖ if you want a smaller crossbody built from 1680D TPU, sized around the phone, wallet, keys and other essentials rather than extra clothing or drinks.
- 1680D TPU construction
- Approx. 1.14 L capacity
- 7.5 × 4.7 × 2 in footprint
- Designed around water and rugged outdoor use
Best fit for capacity, low weight and phone access
Choose the 3L RunOff Waist Pack if you want more room, a clear touchscreen phone window, floatability and one of the lightest published weights in this direct matchup.
- 3 L published capacity
- 7.94 oz published weight
- IP67: 1 m for 30 minutes
- TRU Zip, phone window and floatable design
The specs that actually matter.
This comparison uses the newer 3L RunOff Waterproof Waist Pack, model ROWP-09-R9. Nite Ize also sells a smaller RunOff Hip Pack. They are different products.

Both are built for submersion, but Nite Ize publishes the clearer limit.
Nite Ize states exactly what its IP67 rating means for this product: immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. SKÖ publishes IP68 across its current Crossbody marketing and describes the bag as fully waterproof and submersible, but its current product page does not publish a specific depth and duration.
That makes this more nuanced than simply saying “IP68 beats IP67.” An IP code is a standardized ingress-protection designation, but a buyer still needs the manufacturer's actual use guidance. For the Nite Ize Waist Pack, the public depth and time are explicit. For SKÖ, the higher published IP designation is useful context, but it should not be converted into an invented depth rating.
Nite Ize wins on published submersion clarity. SKÖ publishes the higher IP number. We would not use either fact alone to claim one bag is universally “more waterproof” in real-world use.
Fully waterproof and submersible when properly sealed. Current product page does not list a depth/time figure.
Manufacturer states 1 m of immersion for 30 minutes. Designed to float and keep out dust, sand and water.
The biggest difference is not the IP rating.
It is how much bag you get.
Nite Ize is substantially larger on published capacity and still lighter on the scale. SKÖ is intentionally a compact essentials bag.
Nite Ize publishes about 2.6× the capacity.
Nite Ize is about 39% lighter by the published numbers.
If your priority is maximum storage for the least weight, Nite Ize has the clear numerical advantage. If your goal is a smaller footprint that stays close to the body and carries only high-value essentials, SKÖ's lower capacity may actually be the point rather than a drawback.
SKÖ publishes a much heavier fabric specification.
Nite Ize focuses on lightweight welded construction.
Material numbers tell you how the products are built, not automatically which one will last longer. We would not claim durability superiority without controlled abrasion, puncture and fatigue testing of both finished bags.
A dense material specification paired with a compact 13 oz bag.
A lighter construction system that Nite Ize designed to stay waterproof without the weight of a heavier shell.
This is where the two design philosophies become obvious. SKÖ is smaller but weighs more, which aligns with its 1680D material choice. Nite Ize creates a much larger bag at under 8 ounces by using a lighter TPU-coated polyester body with welded seams. The tradeoff is not “strong versus weak.” It is dense, compact construction versus lighter volume efficiency.
TRU Zip is one of Nite Ize's strongest reasons to buy.
Nite Ize developed TRU Zip and describes it as toothless, silent, smooth-gliding and waterproof. That gives the RunOff a distinct access experience compared with a conventional waterproof zipper.
Nite Ize also gives unusually specific closure instructions. The slider needs to be moved slowly and pulled firmly into the end stop, the seal should be tested periodically, and the zipper should be lubricated routinely. That is not a flaw unique to RunOff. Waterproof zippers depend on correct closure and maintenance.
The RunOff's smooth, silent TRU Zip design is a meaningful feature, not marketing filler. The only caveat is that a waterproof seal still requires deliberate closure and maintenance.
Nite Ize lets you use your phone without opening the bag.
This is one of the clearest product differences. The RunOff Waist Pack includes a universal touchscreen-friendly phone pocket. SKÖ does not have a transparent external phone window.
Check the screen while the phone stays protected.
Nite Ize says the phone pocket fits phones with or without a case up to 6.8 × 4.8 × 0.57 inches. For beach days, waterparks, paddleboards or travel where you repeatedly check a map, message or music, this can eliminate a lot of opening and resealing.
Crossbody versus waist pack is not the real difference.
Both can be worn crossbody. Nite Ize also explicitly supports waist carry. The bigger decision is whether you want a compact 1.14 L profile or a roomier 3 L pack.
A 3 L bag is not automatically better. It sits larger on the body and gives you more space to fill. The SKÖ is easier to treat as a dedicated valuables bag. Nite Ize is closer to a small waterproof day pouch that happens to ride on your waist or chest.
The environment is the tie-breaker.
The feature sheet matters less once you know how you actually plan to use the bag.
You want more room without more weight.
The 3 L capacity, 7.94 oz weight, clear phone panel, flotation and published 1 m/30 min rating make the RunOff especially compelling for beach trips, waterparks, paddleboarding, boating, travel and casual watersports.
- You want a drink, light shell or extra accessories in the same bag
- You check your phone frequently around water
- Floatability matters if the bag gets dropped
- You prioritize low weight and smooth zipper access
You want a smaller bag built around essential valuables.
SKÖ makes more sense when you want phone, keys, wallet and a few small essentials kept close in a compact package, especially if the 1680D TPU material specification and rugged outdoor positioning are priorities.
- You prefer a compact crossbody rather than a 3 L waist pack
- You want dense 1680D TPU construction
- You are carrying essentials, not a light layer or drink
- Your use leans toward kayaking, fishing, hiking and rough travel
| Use case | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beach / waterpark | Nite Ize | Phone window, flotation and extra room |
| Paddleboarding | Nite Ize / depends | 3 L capacity and floatability are useful; SKÖ is smaller if you want less bulk |
| Kayaking | Depends | Nite Ize for capacity, SKÖ for a tighter essentials-only load |
| Hiking / rough travel | SKÖ / depends | Compact footprint and 1680D material spec versus Nite Ize's lighter 3 L utility |
| Phone-first use | Nite Ize | Dedicated clear touchscreen-friendly pocket |
| Minimal essentials carry | SKÖ | Smaller 1.14 L form factor |
| Maximum volume per ounce | Nite Ize | 3 L at 7.94 oz |
At $80 versus $79.99, price is basically irrelevant.
At the prices reviewed, there is a one-cent difference between the two manufacturer listings. That makes this a rare comparison where the buyer can almost completely ignore price and choose based on design.
If you judge value by capacity, low weight and features per dollar, Nite Ize is hard to beat. If you judge value by compactness, 1680D TPU and a bag intentionally sized around high-value essentials, SKÖ can still be the better fit. The wrong way to choose is to assume two $80 waterproof bags are interchangeable.
What current Nite Ize reviewers are actually noticing.
Product reviews are not controlled lab tests, but they are useful for spotting recurring usability themes that spec sheets miss.
Recent REI-hosted reviews repeatedly praise the pack for keeping gear dry, floating when loaded and carrying more than expected for a lightweight waist pack.
A few reviewers mention that the waterproof closure can feel firm or slower to open and close, and one noted that the material can warm up in direct beach sun.
That lines up with Nite Ize's own instructions: fully seat the TRU Zip slider in the end stop and maintain the zipper with lubricant. In other words, the RunOff is easy to use for a waterproof bag, but it is still a waterproof sealing system rather than a normal fashion zipper.
Nite Ize Waist Pack vs Hip Pack:
they are not the same product.
Search results often mix the two. This article compares SKÖ with the larger 3L Waist Pack, not the smaller RunOff Hip Pack.
| Nite Ize model | Capacity | Weight | Price reviewed | Best shorthand |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RunOff Waist Pack | 3 L | 7.94 oz | $79.99 | Larger utility pack |
| RunOff Hip Pack | 0.91 L | 5.4 oz | $59.99 | Smaller phone-and-essentials pack |
Which one should you buy?
Nite Ize wins more pure spec-sheet categories in this matchup. That is worth saying plainly. It gives you more capacity, less weight, a touchscreen phone window, floatability, an explicit 1 m/30 min submersion claim and the smooth TRU Zip system for essentially the same price. SKÖ's reason to exist is different: it is smaller, heavier and built around 1680D TPU for people who want a compact valuables bag rather than a 3 L utility waist pack.
You want the most utility per ounce.
Buy the RunOff Waist Pack if capacity, low weight, a phone window, flotation and published submersion limits are your priorities.
You want a compact, substantial essentials bag.
Buy the SKÖ Crossbody if you want a smaller footprint and 1680D TPU construction for a dedicated phone-wallet-keys carry system.
Questions people ask before choosing.
Is the Nite Ize RunOff Waterproof Waist Pack actually submersible?
Yes. Nite Ize publishes an IP67 rating and states that the Waist Pack withstands immersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes when properly closed and maintained.
Does the Nite Ize RunOff Waist Pack float?
Yes. Nite Ize describes the 3L Waist Pack as floatable. That is a useful difference if you are around boats, docks, pools or paddleboards.
What is the difference between the Nite Ize Waist Pack and Hip Pack?
The newer Waist Pack is much larger at 3 L and is listed at $79.99. The smaller Hip Pack is about 0.91 L and $59.99. This comparison is about the 3L Waist Pack.
Which is bigger, SKÖ or the Nite Ize RunOff Waist Pack?
Nite Ize is much larger by published capacity: 3 L versus approximately 1.14 L for SKÖ. The Nite Ize is also larger in exterior dimensions.
Which is lighter?
Nite Ize. REI lists the 3L RunOff Waist Pack at 7.94 oz, while SKÖ publishes 13 oz for its 1.14L Crossbody.
Can you use your phone through the Nite Ize Waist Pack?
Yes. The pack has a touchscreen-friendly phone pocket and Nite Ize publishes a maximum phone size of 6.8 × 4.8 × 0.57 inches with or without a case.
Is IP68 automatically better than IP67 for a waterproof bag?
Not as a complete buying decision. The IP number describes ingress protection, but buyers should also look at the manufacturer's actual depth, duration, closure and use guidance. Nite Ize publishes 1 m for 30 minutes for this IP67 bag. SKÖ publishes IP68 but does not currently list a depth/time figure on the Crossbody product page.
Which is better for kayaking?
If you want 3 L of space, floatability and phone access through the bag, Nite Ize has strong advantages. If you want a smaller essentials-only bag with a 1680D TPU material specification, SKÖ is the more compact option.
How we built this comparison.
We prioritize manufacturer-published specifications, use retailer technical data only when the manufacturer does not publish a number such as weight, and avoid converting ratings into unsupported performance claims.
